Jesus Christ Brings Something Altogether Better

“Jesus the Christ who is ever ‘the same’ is therefore to be the focus of  Christians’ persevering trust. The Apostle and High Priest par excellence has come (Hebrews 3:1). Like Moses and Joshua (Hebrews 3:2; 4:8) he is sent by God, but he brings the rest which they could not provide. Like Aaron, but more like Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:1-10; 6:20 – 10:18), he rules because he actually deals with sin and its consequences. This supplies the logic for the repeated use of the comparative adjective ‘better’ (see Hebrews 1:4; 7:19,22; 8:6; 9:23; 10:34; 11:16, 35) with reference to a name, hope, covenant, promises, sacrifices, substance, country and resurrection. Jesus Christ brings something altogether better than the old, preparatory era could actually provide (Hebrews 11:40).”
